I am writing to you today because of some troubles I am having with a website that allows anyone to slander anyone (even anonymously) and allows the webmaster of the site (www.ripoffreport.com) to make extort victims (has asked me for $11,500 to "take care of" a report someone listed against me and my business-which has all but killed by business after it was posted in December of 2012).
The webmaster (Ed Magedson) is able to get away with this due to the Section230 of the Communications Decency Act.
Ed Magedson states clearly on his site, www.ripoffreport.com, that he will not remove ANY posts. A court order (if the victims are able to afford an attorney) is the only way to have a report "de-listed" from the Google search index, but the report still remains on the site.
Section 230(c)(1) provides immunity from liability for providers and users of an "interactive computer service" who publish information provided by others:
No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.
As we seen early this year (San Diego man, Kevin Bollaert) the 'porn revenge' site webmaster being sentenced to 18 years in prison on 27 felony counts of extortion and identity theft, I do not see why Ed Magedson should not face a similar fate.
I am asking that the Communications Decency Act be changed to allow people to have search results (especially ones that are clearly slanderous) about themselves be removed (or 'delisted') by Google and other search engines as they do in Europe.

I advise EVERYONE (whether or not you or a family member is listed on rip-off-report) to write your Senators and get this site taken down and Ed Magedson thrown in prison (maybe he can bunk with that Porn Revenge site guy).
I have not heard back Senator Gardner or Senator Michael Bennet (whom I also sent this message to, and tweeted) and do not expect to. But it has to start somewhere and I am done with sitting quietly on this issue.
All it takes is one malcontent client (I just found yesterday that the guy who wrote to rip-off report on me also thrashed a car wash company because he was unhappy about how his $15 car wash came out) to post on this frivolous website. Ironic that a guy that was $60,000 + behind on his taxes-for not having his employer withhold taxes from his paycheck (when I told him he needed to start having taxes taken out of his paycheck is when the problems started)- has the audacity to rant about other people and their business.
It is clear some people need a psychiatrist before they seek help from others to deal with their problems as they just end up causing problems for other people. In this individual's case it is clear that the tax debt is just a symptom of a much larger problem. It is inevitable being in business you are going to get some clients like this (especially in the type of business I am in), however bottom feeders hiding behind the 1st amendment to extort businesses and people is clearly not what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they drafted the Constitution.
So for a measly $1200 the former client pays me-the total fee was $2000 but he could not full pay so I agreed to break the payments up for him which were set up on automatic debit as agreed and signed upon- I now have to face paying $11,000 plus a $100 a month 'monitoring fee' for 36 months for the extortionists at RipOffReport.com to wield their 'Google magic' (see the below email from EDitor) so it pushes the post down in the search engines.
I asked Ed Magedson if there was anyway I could break this payment down as who has $11,000 laying around and here is what he said:

It is either bend over and take it or pay an attorney $5-$7K on retainer which will ultimately do no good as I have found that the ripoffreport extortionists will not remove reports, even with a court order, not to mention the fact that the guy who wrote the report has a Federal Tax Lien filed on him for failing to pay his taxes year after year.
Ed Magedson knows this and knows he can twist the law to make it look like he is some sort of a patriot providing a platform for consumers to site a gripe but the reality is that the real platform he provides is one that allows any nut and psychopath to say ANYTHING about ANYONE (not just about businesses, there are actual posts on www.ripoffreport.com where people claiming other people are HIV positive!), it's a complete joke that this guy is not in prison while some guy who posts video's of girls having sex is (at least he only charged $350 for having the post removed!).
